I definitely agree about the utility of tools such as polls, live text chats, etc. to further engage remote attendees.

This alternative engagement is why I see a virtual meeting as an opportunity that could provide innumerable benefits, yet there certainly is much to be gained in a face to face meeting, which I analyzed here: http://www.qworky.com/blog/2010/06/better-meetings-day-10-foundation-of-face-to-face/

You are entirely right that face to face does not predicate engagement, though. However, there is added accountability, as it's easier to see when people's focus are waning or if they are actively multi-tasking.

Whether it's a virtual or face to face meeting, the key is making sure the meeting is effective enough to entice full focus and engagement. Appreciate your perspective highly in this vein especially, as we're actively seeking ideas and conversation about how Better Meetings can be brought about!

I think virtual and hybrid meetings have their place within today's meeting experiences. Depending upon the type of virtual meeting, there are a variety of things organizers can do to engage their remote attendees. Polls, live text chats during the presentation, live collaboration and breaking the fourth wall are just a few. Usually, the various platforms used for online meetings have some embedded tools to keep an attendee engaged. I've used some tools that let me know when a person leaves the online meeting, if they are asleep or if they are multitasking.

Here's the one thing I think we forget, just because people are contained within four walls for a face-to-face meeting does not mean that they are paying attention or engaged. We've assumed for years that if they are their in body, their minds are controlled by the speaker and the meeting organizers. NOT!
