@Lissa I fundamentally agree- we sometimes forget how to disconnect. I personally find that my biggest bursts of productivity occur after I've disconnected enough to 'reboot', 'reset' and 'restart'
@adrian thanks. I'll check out Linchpin. I haven't read Seth's work since purple cow.

Thanks everyone for your comments- we're just as interested and eager to learn from you.

Seth Godin's new book Linchpin has a chapter "The New World of Work" where he points out that the factory model that, for two hundred years, offered low-risk and high-stability for unthinking workers has fallen apart.

And the solution is not working harder and longer. Instead, it's making a difference by doing work that's really hard to find from anyone else.

I'm interested to see what you guys come up with...

Good post! It is sad that we are victims of technology. As much as we love technology, it does imprison us to longer working hours because of easy access via cellphones, text messges and even social networking sites.

As you know, I specialize in social media marketing and leveraging it for my brand and my clients' brands, but still find myself sometimes getting caught up in it. The key I think with work and using technology is knowing when to turn it off and tune out! Setting boundaries is key! Not always easy, but necessary!

There's no question that a lot of tools aren't built towards how we'd ideally work/live but are built either on what already is in vogue OR is written because something simply can be written. It's always interesting to see how users run with software and how companies respond... or not. (I'd view Twitter's built in retweet function to be a case of poor listening, for example). If Qworky can be that different company, that'd totally rock! It's the right way of looking at the problems, seems to me....

It's a great point, Mikal, that the tools and technologies we use reflect the philosophies of the people who create the software. There are a lot of shared blind spots in the market today and great opportunities for software that's designed an emphasis on diverse perspectives, positive reinforcement, humility and quirkiness as well as excellence.
